This project highlights the design and installation of a custom, handcrafted bathroom suite built entirely in-situ. Moving away from standard prefabricated fixtures, the design embraces a minimalist, monolithic aesthetic where the architecture itself forms the functional elements of the space.
By integrating multi-level platforms, deep soaking wells, and sweeping stepped seating directly into the room’s layout, the space achieves a continuous, sculptural flow. The transition from raw structural blockwork to a flawless, continuous finish highlights the meticulous craftsmanship required to execute high-end architectural plastering.
Technical & Design Specifications
- Structural core: Constructed utilizing lightweight, cellular concrete masonry blocks to build up the primary elevations, internal support cavities, and structural retaining walls.
- Organic geometry: Designed with a sophisticated blend of sharp geometric planes and custom rounded corners to create smooth transitions, eliminating harsh joints and giving the features a cast, fluid appearance.
- Surface coating: Finished with layers of specialized waterproof rendering and high-durability architectural plaster, achieving a seamless, microcement-style satin surface that is both moisture-resistant and tactile.
- Spatial integration: Strategically positioned against industrial-style black window framing to maximize natural light, playing off the smooth, neutral-toned concrete surfaces.
Key Milestones Captured
- Structural masonry layout: The foundation of the build relies on precision-laid blockwork. Raw masonry blocks were cut and assembled to map out the steps, benches, and internal structural ribs.
- Surface sculpting & rough render: Once the core structure was set, a base coat of rendering mortar was applied to unify the masonry blocks. Images show this meticulous sculpting phase, establishing the exact curves and preparing the substrate for waterproofing.
- Monolithic plaster finishing: The final aesthetic is achieved through a refined microcement-style overlay. Visible in the pictures, this topcoat removes all seams, creating a continuous, stone-like installation that unifies the floors, steps, and basin.
Summary
This project stands as a prime example of how structural masonry can be elevated into architectural art. By substituting traditional bathroom fixtures with built-in, plastered concrete features, the suite achieves a unified, spa-like atmosphere. The finished work showcases a seamless blend of modern minimalism, structural permanence, and master-level plaster craftsmanship.
